Much More Than Just A Piece Of Fabric
A towel is an item that each and every person uses. It is basically a piece of absorbent fabric (it can even be a piece of absorbent paper) used for wiping or drying. It is supposed to soak up the moisture on contact by using a rubbing or blotting motion. We do not give this item much thought even though it is such an important part of our daily routine. It has numerous uses in different forms - Bath towel – Used for wiping and drying your body after a bath or shower. The common size of a bath towel is around 30”x60”. But there are various sizes and materials available for you to choose from.
Bamboo Towels – A very important innovation. These towels are completely biodegradable and do not have any harsh chemicals that can harm the environment. They are gentler on the skin too. You will find your skin softer and more alive after using these towels for a period of time. A foot towel is used to wipe the feet after a bath or shower in the absence of a bath mat. A kitchen towel may be a cloth or paper towel used to wipe your hands in the kitchen. A beach towel is usually larger than a bath towel and has colorful patterns and designs. It is used for wiping yourself after a swim. But it is also largely used to lie on to relax or tan at the beach or by the swimming pool. A sports towel is very absorbent and is used by swimmers and divers. It can be squeezed to wring the water out if it gets too wet and thereafter be reused. A tea towel or dish towel is used to dry the dishes and cutlery after they have been washed. A face towel is to wipe the face after washing it. A salon towel is specially designed to be soft and gentle on the skin. They are used in salons and spas. A paper towel is a disposable form of the towel. It can be used and then thrown away. Paper towels come in a roll or as individual folded sheets. Today a towel is not just for use. It has become an item of pride in many homes. You will see the mistress of the house take special care to coordinate the bath, hand and foot towels to the décor of the bathroom. Many a times they are monogrammed with the family initials. Even the kitchen towels are chosen with special care. You will find a variety of patterns, colors and materials available. Some homeowners keep a whole set of little towels for show in the bathroom. These have a satin or lace trim or some special appliqué on them. They cannot be washed often without ruining the accents and so they are not used for actual wiping or drying. The number of different qualities of towels available in the market today is mind boggling. You must consider a few things before you choose the right one for you. This includes the purpose for which it will be used, the fibers, weight and size. Fibers – If you want maximum absorbency then 100% cotton is definitely a better choice than a cotton and polyester blend. Even in cotton you will find a huge range – Pima or Egyptian cotton is considered to be the best and is the most expensive. Weight – This refers to the density of the weave and the amount of fibers and gives the towel its plushness and softness. The cotton fibers must be well combed because this allows the cotton to open up and makes it very absorbent. A combed cotton towel will have its loops standing up while the umcombed (carded) cotton towel will have loops that lie flat against the base. Size – This will be determined by the purpose for which the towel will be used – bath, kitchen, hands, etc. However, even within these uses you will find various sizes. For example – some people like to wrap themselves completely after a bath and would need a larger bath towel or if you are buying a towel especially for drying the hair after washing it, you will need a smaller and thinner towel to avoid breaking the hair. A good towel should serve you for around 3 to 6 years depending on how often it is used and washed. It will surprise you to know that even paper towels come in different qualities. Some of them have a better absorbency compared to others. The lower quality ones stick to your hands while wiping. You will find a very good selection of various types of towels in stores like Bed, Bath and Beyond, Linens ‘n’ Things, Macy’s, JCPenny, etc. There are several retailers online also. But some of us like to feel the material for its plushness and softness and try it on for size before we buy it. What you want to spend is also an important consideration as you will find that there is something to fit every budget and the quality will vary accordingly. Being a knowledgeable and informed buyer will give you more satisfaction from your purchase.
